On a Thursday evening in Chilwell, the school hall fills with the sound of laughter, chatter, and then—like magic—voices rising in harmony. This is GEM Connection, a ladies’ barbershop chorus that has been bringing music, friendship, and joy to the East Midlands for nearly 30 years.
So, what’s barbershop singing?
You might have heard of barbershop quartets from old films or American shows, but barbershop singing is alive and well right here in the East Midlands. It’s a style of unaccompanied (a cappella) four-part harmony. The Lead sings the melody, the Tenor floats above, the Bass anchors with the lowest notes, and the Baritone cleverly weaves in to complete the chord. When it all comes together, something amazing happens—the chords “ring”, creating an overtone that sounds like a fifth voice has joined in. It gives you goosebumps just listening!
And it’s not just about standing still and singing. Barbershop is about performing—telling a story through music, and often adding some moves to really bring songs to life.
A chorus with history (and medals to prove it)
GEM Connection has been singing together for over 27 years, and in that time they’ve travelled far and wide, from Spain to the USA, to represent the East Midlands on the international stage. They regularly compete at the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) conventions and are currently ranked 10th in the UK, with a proud collection of silver and bronze medals under their belts—including an international silver in Spain.
But it’s not all about competitions. GEM love to perform wherever there’s a chance—be it local fundraisers, town festivals, concerts, or even in the pub. Their song list is as varied as their members, covering everything from Queen and Fleetwood Mac to folk songs, hymns, and musical theatre classics.
Who makes up GEM?
The women of GEM Connection are a wonderfully mixed bunch—different ages, backgrounds, and day jobs, all united by one thing: a love of singing. Members travel from across the Greater East Midlands (which is where the name GEM comes from) to be part of the weekly rehearsals in Chilwell.
And if you’re wondering whether you need to be an expert singer to join, the answer is: not at all. GEM welcomes new faces. There’s an audition process, but don’t let that put you off—it’s designed to support you every step of the way with mentoring and training. For many, joining GEM has been the start of a new hobby, new skills, and lasting friendships.
Singing is good for you
If you’ve ever belted out a tune in the car or sung along at a concert, you’ll know how uplifting singing can feel. But did you know it’s also good for your health? Singing releases “happy hormones” like endorphins and serotonin, which reduce stress and boost mood. It lowers anxiety, helps build confidence, and even strengthens your immune system by reducing cortisol—the stress hormone. Add the sense of community and belonging you get from singing with others, and you’ve got a recipe for better mental wellbeing.
It’s no surprise GEM members often say rehearsal night is the highlight of their week.
Fancy giving it a go?
GEM Connection rehearses every Thursday evening, 7:15pm to 9:45pm at Chilwell Secondary School. Visitors are always welcome to pop along, watch, and soak up the atmosphere. Who knows—you might even discover you’ve got a hidden harmony inside you!
Whether they’re performing on the international stage or singing down the local, GEM Connection’s mission is simple: to share the joy of harmony, friendship, and song with as many people as possible.
