Gem Connection Ladies Barbershop Chorus

Sing with us

If you can sing in tune, would like a new and sociable hobby which includes the thrill of performance and are prepared to commit your time and efforts to it we would like to hear from you.

The process of becoming a member takes some time as there is a lot to learn. However each new member is allotted a ‘buddy’ from the chorus and has the support of a member of the Music Team throughout this period. You will learn at your own pace and there is no pressure or time limit.

Joining a Barbershop chorus is an excellent way to improve your voice, your confidence, your breathing and your social life! As members of GEM Connection we believe that improving our ability as singers is really important. We work on developing our craft at our weekly rehearsals, at special chorus education days and weekends and at educational events organised by LABBS, the organisation to which we belong.

Induction process for new members
At Gem we have a carefully planned induction process for prospective new members. Each new recruit is supported to work at her own pace and is provided with small, achievable goals which build gradually as she is developing confidence and demonstrating commitment. She receives the weekly support of a personal ‘buddy’, the New Members Rep and her Section Leader (the person who leads each voice part section of the chorus). This is vital if newcomers are not to feel isolated and overwhelmed. All steps are taken at the recruit’s own pace.  Our chorus has a very enthusiastic, positive, and friendly ethos which is remarked on by newcomers.

The following statements were made by some of our newcomers in 2007.

“Gem has a very clear and organised approach for new members to follow. As the weeks have gone by I have been encouraged to join in as much as possible, without being pressured to do more than I am comfortable with. As I have passed through each stage, I have been overwhelmed by the support and congratulations that I have received from all chorus members.  I feel that the audition stages for new members are well thought out to build confidence gradually, and make the process of joining much less intimidating and overwhelming than it could be.” Sam

“When I joined Gem everyone made me feel so welcome, they are supportive and encouraging and if I have any problems they are always willing to help and their friendship is one of Gem's best qualities.I have a great section leader and director who give endless energy and support, which encourages me to perform better and hopefully I will keep improving. It’s a thrill when you know you have hit the right notes! It is a lovely hobby and I am so glad I joined Gem.”  Denise

"From the moment I saw GEM perform, I knew that I wanted to join.  They made me feel so welcome from the outset.  Because it was such a busy time of year I had to wait several weeks for my first voice test, but I was so keen that it didn't really matter.  It just made the moment that I passed the audition all the sweeter; I will never forget the jubilant faces as the Music Team all shouted "BASS!" in unison.  I was quickly scooped up into the bosom of the bass section and haven't looked back since."  Gill

If this sounds like your kind of hobby why not come along to a rehearsal night. We’d be happy to welcome you along.

Our weekly rehearsals take place every Thursday from 7 until 10 pm at Harrington Junior School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BQ.  location map

Visitors are always made very welcome. It is a good idea to contact a member of the chorus before coming along. Someone will then be ready to greet you on arrival.
