LABBS, the Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS),holds its annual Convention in late autumn, with competitions for both choruses and quartets. This is a weekend when singers take over a whole town!
Each group’s performance comprises two songs which have been rehearsed for many weeks beforehand in order to achieve optimum results. A panel of trained judges record their scores and comments for each performance in three separate categories, these being Music, Singing and Presentation. Choruses work tremendously hard in the months running up to the competition to improve their rankings and, for some, to win a coveted medal. Singing and performance techniques are rehearsed to the highest level possible. Medal winning choruses and quartets appear on shows during the weekend, and some go on to enter further Barbershop competitions in the USA and Europe. So the stakes are high, as is the level of achievement of the medal winners.
The weekend is action-packed with non-stop rehearsals, competitions, parties and shows, and a good time is had by all.
After a year out in 2014 which included our wonderful tour of Tuscany, we returned in 2015 with our Bronze medal winning package of the lively ‘The Night has a Thousand Eyes’ followed by the haunting ballad ‘Lover Come Back’.
We were proud to achieve our highest ever mark with this performance.
